Adelaide’s hotel landscape continues to expand

Posted 15 June 2021

Adelaide is in the midst of a hotel boom, with a raft of new internationally-branded and boutique hotels opening their doors within the CBD in the past six months, with more to come. In addition, InterContinental Adelaide has announced a $32 million upgrade, with works scheduled to commence later this year.

“We’re coming out of the COVID-19 period with more hotel infrastructure than we had pre-2020, plus additional hotels on the horizon. This includes some really interesting new developments with internationally-branded corporate hotels, including Crowne Plaza Adelaide which opened in November last year, Sofitel Adelaide which is opening this September (2021) and a Westin property opening in 2022.

“We’ve also welcomed a series of new boutique hotels in recent months offering great character, including Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets, the Oval Hotel and Eos by SkyCity.”

The proximity of the new hotels to the Adelaide Convention Centre is perhaps what is most exciting for conference clients and delegates, with all located just a short distance away, reaffirming the city’s reputation as a walkable conference destination.

OVAL HOTEL

The Oval Hotel was the first in the series of Adelaide’s new hotel openings, coming online in September 2020. Connected to the iconic Adelaide Oval, which is just a short walk from the Convention Centre across the Adelaide Riverbank footbridge, the Oval Hotel’s 138 guest rooms provide panoramic views of the parklands, River Torrens and Adelaide city skyline. The Oval Hotel is also home to two South Australian inspired dining spaces, Five Regions Restaurant and Bespoke Wine Bar & Kitchen.

CROWNE PLAZA ADELAIDE

Following the re-brand of Crowne Plaza hotels, Crowne Plaza re-entered the Adelaide market in November 2020. Situated in the city’s east end immediately adjacent Lot Fourteen, Crowne Plaza Adelaide is just a short tram ride from the Adelaide Convention Centre. It offers 329 modern accommodation rooms with expansive views across the city and Adelaide Hills, a stunning infinity pool overlooking the city skyline, a fully equipped gym and Adelaide’s highest positioned restaurant, Koomo, serving Japanese inspired cuisine.

EOS BY SKYCITY

November 2020 also marked the completion of SkyCity Adelaide’s $330m expansion, including the opening of the five-star Eos by SkyCity. Overlooking the Adelaide Riverbank Precinct and just a short walk from the Convention Centre, Eos by SkyCity offers visiting delegates a choice of 120 luxury rooms and suites, along with a host of special amenities including a spa and wellness centre, an outdoor swimming pool, two restaurants and a rooftop bar – the perfect place to unwind following a full day’s conferencing.

HOTEL INDIGO ADELAIDE MARKETS

More recently, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Marketsopened its doors in March, 2021. Ideally located next to the lively Adelaide Central Markets, this vibrant new hotel – Australia’s first under the Hotel Indigo brand – features intriguing interior design with deep connections to the neighbourhood. It offers yet another convenient option for visiting delegates (it too is just a short walk or tram ride from the Convention Centre) with 145 well-appointed guest rooms, an outdoor pool, fully equipped gym, and two restaurants, Market & Meander Eatery and Bar & Merrymaker, Adelaide’s highest rooftop bar.

ADDITIONAL HOTELS ON THE HORIZON

Beyond these recent openings, there is an additional 1,600 hotel rooms currently under development within Adelaide’s city centre, including:

  • Sofitel Adelaide (September 2021)
  • Westin Adelaide (2022)
  • Hyatt Regency (2023)
  • Wyndham Grand Adelaide (2024)

$32M UPGRADE FOR INTERCONTINENTAL ADELAIDE

But that isn’t all when it comes to hotel news. In other exciting news for conference clients, InterContinental Adelaide, which is located immediately adjacent to the Adelaide Convention Centre, recently announced a $32M upgrade. Scheduled to commence later this year and earmarked for completion in 2023 (with the hotel remaining open throughout), the renovation will include a redesign of all 367 guest rooms and suites; refreshed restaurant and bar experiences; a new InterContinental Club Lounge; and a face lift of the hotel’s public areas.
