Adelaide Convention Centre’s commitment to sustainability and staging creative, impactful events was celebrated on a national stage last night, as the venue claimed three major honours at the prestigious Australian Business Events Awards in Sydney.

Among the awards, Cellar Door Fest was judged ‘Best Consumer Show’, with Adelaide Convention Centre also claiming the ‘Sustainability Initiative Award – Environment and Climate’ along with the overall ‘Best Product or Initiative in 2024’ Award for its leadership in minimising waste to landfill.

The Awards – a focal point of this week’s Australian Business Events Association (ABEA) conference in Sydney – honour outstanding achievements in the Australian business events industry.

Martin Radcliffe, CEO at Adelaide Venue Management, proud operators of Adelaide Convention Centre, comments: “Australia’s business events industry is of an exceptional standard, so for Adelaide Convention Centre to receive these three national accolades is a real coup for South Australia.

“Our team at Adelaide Convention Centre is proudly committed to showcasing South Australia’s amazing food and drink producers and operating sustainably on every front. Awards for Cellar Door Fest and our waste management processes are a true testament to this.”

Best Consumer Show – Cellar Door Fest

Cellar Door Fest – Adelaide’s favourite food and drink festival – is an annual consumer showcase created and managed by Adelaide Convention Centre.  The festival proudly champions the ‘eat, drink, support local’ message, bringing South Australia’s finest wine, spirits and artisan food producers together under one roof for three days of gourmet fun. From the internationally renowned to boutique brands and emerging producers, Cellar Door Fest presents South Australia’s unparalleled wine regions, distillery scene and bespoke dining experiences

ABEA’s ‘Best Consumer Show Award’ was presented for Cellar Door Fest 2024, which shone a spotlight on more than 100 producers from across 14 South Australian regions. The 2025 festival is set to return to Adelaide Convention Centre, 31 January – 2 February.

Sustainability Initiative Award – Environment and Climate
Best Product or Initiative in 2024

The ‘Sustainability Initiative Award – Environment and Climate’ recognises Adelaide Convention Centre’s unwavering commitment to sustainability

From its food and design to its practices and people, sustainability is embedded in all Adelaide Convention Centre does. This was evident when it became the world’s first convention centre to achieve EarthCheck Master certification, reflecting 15+ years’ best practice in environmental, business and social sustainability, and bolstering South Australia’s reputation as a sustainable events destination. In its most recent EarthCheck audit, Adelaide Convention Centre was identified as the leader in the Australian business events industry for minimising waste to landfill, potable water consumption, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

ABEA’s ‘Sustainability Initiative Award – Environment and Climate’ highlighted the Centre’s reduction of organic waste to landfill, aided by installation of Adelaide’s first WasteMaster – an advanced recycling system that converts food waste to high value uses, including organic soils and composts. Awards judges recognised an associated 65% reduction in organic waste, by converting 87,000 kgs into 31,000kgs of nutrient-rich residue. Significantly reducing the volume of waste sent offsite minimises the Centre’s transport emissions.

After claiming the Sustainability Initiative Award, Adelaide Convention Centre progressed to the winner’s circle which saw the venue take out the overall Best Product or Initiative Award in 2024 to reinforce its global sustainability leadership.
